English is based on Tenses. Without Tenses, it is difficult to learn English Grammar. If you want to learn English, improve your Tenses first.

Tenses are of three types:

1) Present Tense - Present Indefinite, Present Continuous, Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous


2) Past Tense - Past Indefinite, Past Continuous, Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous


3) Future Tense - Future Indefinite, Future Continuous, Future Perfect and Future Perfect Continuous

Here Past Tense has been discussed below with its four types:


1) Past Indefinite (Simple) - S + V2 + O.

S- Subject, The person who is doing action, called 'Subject'.

V- Verb, The action which is done by Subject, called 'Verb'.

O- Object, It comes after 'Verb', Object is effected by 'Verb'.

1) He/ She played cricket.
2) I read the book.
3) The postman delivered the dak yesterday.
4) She cooked food.
5) He wrote the novel last month.

2) Past Continuous (Progressive) - S + was/were +V1 + ing + O.

We use 'was' with pronouns like 'I', 'He', 'She', 'It'.

We use 'were' with pronouns like 'We', 'You', 'They'.

1) I/ He/ She was playing cricket.
2) We/ You/ They were playing cricket.
3) I was reading the book.
4) The postman was delivering the dak.
5) She was cooking the food.
6) He was writing novel.

3) Past Perfect - S + had + V3 + O.

1) He/She/We/you/They had played cricket.
2) They had eaten their meal.
3) We had won the match.
4) He had taken bath.
5) She had cooked the food.

4) Past Perfect Continuous - S + had + been + V1 + ing + O.

1) He/She/We/You/They had been playing cricket since 2 0' clock.
2) We had been studying for three hours.
3) They had been living here since 2015.
4) She had been cooking food for one hour.
5) The postman had been delivering the dak for half an hour.
